| Lome In Lome it was the first time that I found a well established German run “Matrosen Heim” with the priest etc. that actually was more of a German club than anything else. I and some other travelers were at first very welcome as everybody wanted to hear our stories. We were also invited to come to the swimming pool, but not for too long. The men went to work and many of the wife spent part of the day at the swimming pool and as we did. This made the man uncomfortable and so the priest (the moral authority, we did not go to the Sunday service anyway) advised us not to come to the swimming pool anymore. I guess we were too good looking. Trim, sunburned and Gold blond. I remember how we argued with the Priest about the possibility to bypass Nigeria and the Congo to reach Angola. We explained to him that there is a ship going every 4-5 month from Fernando Poo to Annabon and Sao Thome. From Sao Thome there are ships coming from Portugal, stopping in Sao Thome, at that time a Portuguese colony, and on to Luanda, Angola. He, being the expert sailor, did not believe it and suggested that we should go home because it was too dangerous to travel in Africa.. Anyway, we had a good time there recovering as it was one of the better places. I and the others moved as much as possible from Peace Corp to Missionaries. It was always a change for them and for us. Other times I talked to the Village Chief and got a place to stay. If nothing was available, than I just waited for the early evening and found a place to hide and sleep for the night. It was just me and my blanket. The markets were always up and running early morning. Something hot, tea or coffee was available. Just powder coffee and Milkmaid. Milkmaid, one could get everywhere. If there was nothing to eat, just eat a tin of Milkmaid. Lots of sugar. |
