The picture you see was taken at the very end of the trip in Basel. (Click on it for a larger picture) The last stretch in Switzerland was quite something. Just arriving late from Italy (Como) in Switzerland we stopped in a parking lot and went to sleep. In the middle of the night the police opened up the side doors of the Bus and wanted to see papers. We were of course half asleep and shaken. This is it, and the afghani souvenirs are gone. Anyway the police went away again and in the morning we went on. We were not long on the highway and the police stopped us. After a long discussion the police declared the Bus as not being fit for the highway. They impounded the Bus in the courtyard of the Police. The nightmare was getting stronger. Peter, who was in charge of the mechanics of the car, called his brother. He arrived early afternoon and could explain that the Bus would only go until Basel were the Bus would be exhibited by VW because the Bus went trough Africa and back over India. Of course he looked like a proper Swiss Citizen and the police gave in under the condition that only the driver could go on. We walked around the corner and got in. Luckily no more stopping until Basel.
