| German Cargo Ship After checking for several days daily around 12 O’clock for ships, especially German Ships, we found a small German Cargo Ship willing not only to invite us for a meal but also to take us along to Douala (Cameroon) To our surprise the ship was really small and we wondered how such a small ship could make it coming from Hamburg. The ship was very neat and moved slowly from harbor to harbor along the coast of West-Africa delivering salt. Why it had to be a German ship delivering salt we could not find out. We slept on deck on a deck chair and the weather was wonderful. The food was really down to earth. Potatoes, spinach (cooked to death) and eggs for lunch. We eat a lot making the chef somewhat nervous. We of course had to work. We did our best also to make sure that the captain would take more people when we leave a good impression. We chipped the rust away like mad until the captain came and told us that he expects us to chip away the rust and paint it over but he would not expect us to remodel or reshape the ship. So we worked somewhat slower after the hint. It was not long and we arrived in Douala well rested and well fed. |
